Savannah Prep Football Playoff Predictions Nov. 14th 2008

Well for some teams it was their second round playoff game and for others the first. My predications yesterday morning were a little with the heart, but how can you go against Jack Miller. I will be entering my 30th year of being involved in high school football. I just hope I can make it to my 53rd like Coach Miller did.

To Coach Miller a local Savannah product you made us all proud. Congratulations on a fantastic year and Career. You will surely be missed by the St. Andrew’s community and of course the Savannah Area Prep Football Community.

Here are my predictions from Karl’s Korner” on the Bill Edwards show on WTKS 1290 AM. You can listen to my predictions and high school prep stars and guest every Friday morning at 7 am on the “Big One” WTKS 1290 AM.

RANKING FORMULA –

First each team is given 100 points to start. Then for each win we give them 50 points. Next we take the schedule into consideration and give them 5 more points for each win their opponents have and then divide that number by the number of games the team has played. We then come up with a power rating to rank the teams. Then we can subjectively rank the teams by comparing this information.

Savannah Area Week #8 Prep Sports Report Prep Football Poll

Savannah Area Week #8 Prep Sports Report Prep Football Poll 10/15/2008

Doing a lot of research on the Georgia prep football polls the past couple of days. I came across three popular polls, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Georgia AP prep football poll, and the GaSports.com/GACA Coaches Football Poll. Basically the polls have the same teams in their top 10 positions and of course there are some slight differences. I will say it is nice to see Savannah Christian from the Savannah area to get some kind of recognition.
Why do I say this? If we look at head to head competition. Savannah Christian took the #1 team, Emanuel County Institution to the wire. Yes, I know they lost in the last minute of the game, but that should prove that they should be higher in these polls. So, take a look and you compare these polls and let me know what you think.
I have also included my Savannah Area Prep Football Poll based on some key factors. It is explained and it is a system that I was involved when I coached in another state and I think it works well. I know I am the only one using a subjective point of view when I rank these teams. So, I left the teams based on the formula and if I get enough opinions we can come up with one common poll. I will post my Prep Sports Report Pigskin Picks tomorrow night. Looking forward to another “Friday Under the Lights.”

Week #7 The Prep Sports Report Pigskin Picks

We now enter week #7 tonight. Most teams have played half their schedule and some even further. Last weeks record for the first Prep Sports Report Pigskin Picks was better then expected. Overall the record for week #6 was 12-2. Not to shabby.

This week again I will not pick the Effingham County (**) game against Brunswick, because I coach there and the Calvary (*) versus Country Day game because my son plays for Calvary. My picks are the schools in bold. So you make the picks and let me know how good you do.

Once again the “Friday Night Lights” are about to be turned on and “You Gotta’ Love It”. Good luck to the entire Savannah Area Prep football teams tonight! No matter what, you are all winners because of the commitment you make everyday in practice to succeed on Friday nights.

Fun in Practice – No Way

I recently heard a fellow coach state, “Fun in practice is not allowed.” Man is that wrong. As a coach for almost 30 years I have seen a lot of athletes participate in sports. Every athlete comes to practice to learn skills, participate, compete, develop fitness, and I think most all to have fun. What can we do as coaches to make our athletes have fun and of course win?

It all starts within your practice. Just like our bodies get accustom to our workouts, the athletes get accustom to our practices. As coaches we need to make change in our practice sessions. Why because doing the same drill every day becomes boring. This in turn makes playing a team sport boring and dreadful. Yes, a repetition is the key to getting better, but we can do this by changing the drills.

How do we accomplish this? First, we all should be planning out our practices. That means get a variety of drills. There are different drills that teach the same skill. These drills are out there. You don’t have to recreate the wheel. Search and you shall find them. That means we have to prepare to make it fun for our athletes.

By doing this we might just be motivating our athletes to come to practice. This makes the players come to practice not knowing what to expect and motivates them to come to practice eager to practice. If they are eager they will work hard. When they work hard they practice at game time intensity.

Yes expect mistakes in practice. That is what practice is for. Create a positive atmosphere. I can tell you if the player knows that they will not be punished for every little mistake they then will work harder and be more aggressive. Your players should not be afraid to make mistakes.

Help them to understand that we all make mistakes and these types of people are trying very hard and who care about becoming a better athlete. The greatest athletes in every sport make mistakes. If your team is having fun and are getting better in the process, chances are good that you will be having fun too. Do your coaching in practice. As the great Coach John Wooden said, “The way you practice is the way you play.” Let them have fun in practice and they will have fun in the game!
